With almost a hundred years of musical experience between them, Benny Green and Bucky Pizzarelli are two of the most accomplished and recognized jazz musicians around. Singularly, they are masters of their instruments and have garnered praise and achievement that stands the test of time. Together, they are sure to weave a night of music that will whisk even the most unwilling into a euphoric whirlwind of jazz.

Benny Green began learning the piano at age seven, often improvising and trying to imitate the music he heard on his father’s records. After moving to New York and developing his own sound, Benny joined a few bands including work with Betty Carter, Art Blakely, and Freddie Hubbard. His recording career is impressive, with over 100 sessions booked and countless artists accompanied. He recently released Jazz at the Bistro, a Ray Brown tribute, as well as Blue Bird,  a collaboration with Russell Malone.

Bucky Pizzarelli, playing since the age of 17, has over six decades of touring and studio experience. As a self-taught musician, Bucky is known as one of the jazz chord soloist greats. He has played with many greats including Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, and Stephane Grappelli. Of late he has often performed with his son, John Pizzarelli. At 83 years, Bucky was recently honoured by the New York Public Library as one of its speakers at the “Duke Jazz Talks” interview series.

SPECIAL EVENT: The Cellar Restaurant and Jazz Club Presents
Harlem Groove : Soul Jazz Legend Seleno Clarke with Stellar Vancouver Ensemble

Seleno Clarke and his Hammond “B3” organ will unleash a musical delight at the Cellar Restaurant on August 21 and 22. A master of soul jazz, his music will ignite your senses and make you yell “Lordy Lordy!” In the 60’s, organ ensembles were all the rage, and the Harlem Groove rang with the sounds of Clarke’s organ and sax.

Clarke’s magnetism has attracted many outstanding performers to play with him. Musical greats like George Benson and the late Grant Green have frequently played with Clarke’s band. As well, Clarke has been invited to play with such musicians as Melvin Sparks, Jimmy Ponder, Jessie Hameen, Mark Whitfield, and Russell Malone.

Not only does Clarke’s special blend of gospel soul and Harlem jazz have a distinctly contemporary sound, but also the improvisation between the band members is always tight, perfectly in synch with Clarke’s moves and grooves.

At the Cellar Restaurant, Clarke plays for two nights only, joined by an incredible cast of Vancouver musicians including Cory Weeds on sax, Chris Davis on Trumpet, Dave Sikula on guitar, and Jesse Cahill on drums. These musicians are some of Vancouver’s, if not Canada’s, finest. Together they will play a night of inspiring Harlem Groove and soul jazz that will incite audiences to tap their feet, clap their hands, and enjoy uniquely funky Harlem Groove.

After a short hiatus, Mimosa is releasing their third album Méli-mélo and are ready to start touring again!

If Serge Gainsbourg, Cleo Laine and Jobim all hung out together one night and jammed, they might sound something like Mimosa: a journey into a land of gorgeous melodies, groovy rhythms and stellar improvisations.

The band features vocalist Rebecca Shoichet. Rebecca spent many years playing with some of Vancouver's most established bands (Soulstream, Famous Players, Kia Kadiri, Lache Cercel). As well, Rebecca has extensive Musical Theatre experience (for example, Joni Mitchell's "River"). Karen Graves is well known as a virtuoso sax and flute player (Joelle Rabu, the Temptations, Marilyn Lerner, Maynard Ferguson, Mother of Pearl) and brings passion and incredible improvisations to the combo.  Anna Lumiere is the main driver behind the wheel of the band, playing left-hand bass and keyboards and writing most of the music and lyrics in French, Spanish and English. Drummers Bernie Arai and Nino diPasquale, both incredible rhythm machines, share the drum chair.

A cocktail with the purest and most exciting ingredients, Mimosa will shake you up and stir you in.
