Marrying the highly silly with the highly cerebral, Charlie Demers is a Vancouver comic and author who alternates high-brow and low-brow with such ease as to transcend... um, brows. By combining political humour that's never shrill or self-righteous with broader jokes that are never thoughtless, Charlie is equally well-received whether delivering jokes in a sports bar or emceeing a gala for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Not many people have both on their resume.
But Charlie's resume is anything but typical. He's a favourite on CBC Radio's hit comedy 'The Debaters', where he is a regular contributor, and as a stand-up and sketch comedian he has performed across Canada and in numerous festivals including the prestigious Just For Laughs. He's also an accomplished author: the Globe and Mail noted his novel, 'The Prescription Errors', for its "arresting characters, and scenes humming with note-perfect dialogue," while his book of essays, 'Vancouver Special' (which was shortlisted for the Hubert Evans BC Book Prize for Non-Fiction) was praised by the same newspaper for its "blend of acute observation, wit, intelligent reflection and lapidary prose." Charlie has been known to combine his stage acumen with his writing skills, providing author readings that are funny, touching, and always engaging.
He was also a co-host of CityTV's subversive comedy newspanel 'The Citynews List,' along with his sketch comedy partner Paul Bae, with whom he forms '
Bucket,' the act that Robin Williams called "the future of comedy."
