You are invited to come to the release of Kamanala, a celebration of, and love for World Cultures, Music and Dance. Tambura Rasa in association with Turner Music and Events are pleased to present “Kamanala Dance” at Wise Hall, Friday Apr 11th.
Enjoy exotic food and chai tea from East is East Restaurant/Chai Gallery throughout the evening, while enjoying the sights and sounds from centuries past.
Join Tambura Rasa as they take you on a journey of Flamenco and Middle-Eastern Fusion, Balkan Rhythms, Afro-Latin beats and many more cross-cultural musical styles and art-forms. Rounding out the evening, Flamenco Dancer, Karen Pitkethly and Belly Dancer, Leah merge their dances and colourful costumes creating the city’s hottest global dance party. |

Bring you a multicultural mix from the Mediterranean and beyond with a dynamic signature blend of Gypsy violin, Flamenco guitar, African percussion and Middle Eastern rhythms. Join Ivan Tucakov (guitar), Pepe Danza (percussion), Mike Fraser (violin), Mike Michalkow (drums), John Bews (bass), as they serve up an odyssey through the great musical passions of ancient and present-day folk-cultures.

FLAMENCO AND BELLY DANCE SHOW
Enjoy Flamenco dancer Karen and belly dancer Leah as they merge their dances to
Tambura Rasa’s Flamenco and Middle Eastern set.
Karen Pitkethly – Flamenco Dancer
Karen has trained intensively in ballet, contemporary, and flamenco dance. She has been performing professionally for over ten years. Some performance include: Vancouver Opera’s production of “Carmen”, Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, featured soloist in Flamenco Festivals throughout Vancouver. She is also co-director and owner of “Aurora Dance” performing “brio” – a fresh approach to flamenco dance.
Leah – Belly Dancer
Leah has been dancing since she was a child. Starting out with Ballet and later discovering Belly Dance in her teens. Inspired by the earthy rhythms and hauntingmelodies of Middle Eastern music, Leah will transport you to the intoxicating world of the Middle East.
Luis Gutierrez – Salsa Show
Luifer/Luis was born in Venezuela , a country of Salsa. In 1995 Luifer began to share his passion for Salsa by teaching his own personal style, which he calls 'romantic Salsa'. Luis has been dancing Salsa and others Latin dances for over 20 years and taught it since 1995 in the Vancouver Area, and has spread his style in clubs worldwide. Luis has developed his personal style and form of this dance by traveling and dancing around the world. |

HAVANA JAZZ FESTIVAL TOUR: SUNDAY, FEB 8 – MONDAY, FEB 16, 2009
Learn about Cuba and experience the world’s best jazz on the Havana Jazz Festival Tour. Since 1984, the big names of world jazz have taken to the Havana Jazz Festival stage, including the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Charlie Haden and Chucho Valdes (2008 festival president).
The program has been designed for first time visitors to get to know Cuba while experiencing the best of Cuban and international jazz. During the tour, you'll attend the gala opening ceremony at the Karl Marx Theatre and the closing ceremony on February 17. Tour members will stay at the Hotel Riviera, official accommodations for the festival, offering numerous opportunities to rub shoulders with Cuban and world jazz greats.

March 20 - Van Django
Swingin’ Gypsy Jazz
Van Django is an exciting and entertaining quartet inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s 1930’s swinging gypsy jazz group, Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Four Vancouver musicians make up the group Van Django— Cameron Wilson on violin, Budge Schachte on guitar, Finn Manniche on guitar/cello and Laurence Mollerup on double bass. You can expect a thoroughly entertaining evening!

Tango Paradiso captures the drama of a musical form that began in the bordellos and bars of Argentina. Performing traditional and post modern tango uniquely and passionately, from tango classics to original compositions and arrangements, Tango Paradiso’s sound is fresh and compelling, entrancing audiences and critics alike. The group readily mixes Tango, Jazz and modern Classical music into a potent blend.

| Turner Music and Events works closely throughout the year with Vancouver's finest and most intimate live music venue, the Cellar Restaurant and Jazz
Club, and with Vancouver's Cellar Live record Label. The Cellar Live Label was founded in 2001 by musician/producer/jazz club owner Cory Weeds. When Weeds purchased The Cellar Restaurant and Jazz Club. in August, 2000 he immediately started assembling some recording gear to preserve the incredible music that was being performed on stage every night.
All of Cellar Live's releases have received fabulous reviews and the label has established itself as one of the country's finest producers of jazz music.
